Residents Say There Is No Policing On The Lanes And Cycle Paths Of The City. At The Beginning Of The Year A Demonstration Against Wave Of Robberies Was Held.
With a cycle path of more than 100 kilometers in length, many Sorocaba prefer to use the bicycle as a means of transport, not to mention that it is a great way to maintain health. But the feeling of insecurity made many cyclists of Sorocaba (SP) change the routine on the bike paths. A lot of people do not want to take risks at night after cases of robbery and violence have been recorded.
Earlier this year, a group of friends were victimized by assailants on Avenida Dom Aguirre as they returned from a walk through the countryside of Sorocaba. Two men approached cyclists very close to the General Investigations Office (DIG). The woman was overthrown and the man, who reacted, caught up with the criminals.
In February, a woman was run over by a rural road in the eastern part of the city. With the impact fractured the shoulder and four ribs. She believes the driver tried to knock her down to steal the bike that was not taken because it was destroyed.
Those who use the bike paths have been insecure in recent times because of the violence that is being practiced on the slopes.
The independent professional Luíza Miranda did not give up doing the exercises with the bike, but tries to return home before dark. “This is a way for me to prevent myself. With so much news of assault we are afraid,” he says.
Five years ago the metallurgist José Carlos Oliveira goes to and from work at least twice a week by bicycle. After the wave of assaults he realized that policing had increased. “I saw the guards riding a bike and I think it’s because of the cases that happened,” he says.
Adilson de Oliveira also uses the bike path with great caution, since policing is rare, he said. “I’ve never seen one, and we’re a bit unprotected. You want to take care of your health and you’re hostage to the bad guys,” complains the driver.
After these cases registered in the city, a group of 200 cyclists appeared for more security. With banners and posters, they staged a protest in February and drew attention in Lions Square on Avenida Dom Aguirre. After that, the Municipal Guard promised to enhance safety on the bike paths.
